Everything you need to know about EPE foam packaging — materials, manufacturing and quality.

Knowledge Base

EPE foam, explained

EPE (expanded polyethylene) foam, also known as pearl cotton, is a soft, flexible packaging material with excellent cushioning properties. It is widely used for electronics, glass and ceramics, precision instruments, furniture, shoes and hats, and more.

Through lamination and thickening it can also serve as case and bag lining, a moisture barrier under wooden flooring, cold-room insulation, and sports padding.

The production line uses a single-screw butane physical foaming process for high expansion ratio and energy efficiency. It is equipped with explosion-proof electrical components, variable-frequency speed control and intelligent digital-instrument automation for safe, stable, continuous operation.

Process flow: plastic pellets → formulation mixing → heating and extrusion → foaming agent injection → melt blending → extrusion → cooling and forming → sizing and slitting → cooling and haul-off → flattening → winding → finished product. By changing the die head, the same line can produce foam tubes, rods and netting.

Finished sheet and coil stock can be laminated and composited into EPE packaging materials and anti-static packaging. U-profiles can be cut and shaped into door and window corner protectors for a complete protective solution.

No. EPE is non-toxic, odourless, moisture-proof, shock-absorbing, sound-insulating, heat-insulating, highly plastic, tough and recyclable. It is a genuinely environmentally friendly alternative to traditional packaging materials.

Traditional packaging materials can create white pollution if discarded and release harmful smoke if burned. EPE does neither — it can be recycled and reused repeatedly. When anti-static agents and flame retardants are added it gains those enhanced properties as well.

EPE is even used for inner packaging of fruit and other food-adjacent goods, so it is safe when used correctly and as intended.

EPE tube and profile quality depends mainly on two factors: density and manufacturing technique. Density is the decisive one.

Generally speaking, higher density means better quality: the foam recovers its shape faster after compression (better elasticity), protecting contents more effectively. A denser foam is also firmer and retains its toughness even under heavy compression. When selecting a product, focus on density and you will be able to spot true quality.

The L-profile is made from high-quality EPE cut into shape with a knife die and heat-sealed or heat-composited. It is available in a range of colours.

Hardness: typically 20–40° (Shore C). Different hardness grades are chosen for different products to provide the best protection. It is widely used for electronics, export shipments, glassware, wine, precision instruments, medical equipment, monitors and LCD TVs — wherever shock and knock protection matters.
